Zimbabwe’s mining sector is being hailed as a cornerstone of national development, with industry leaders and government officials emphasizing that sustainable growth, innovation, and mutual trust are key to shaping its future. Speaking at the 12th Edition of the Mining Media Awards at Crowne Plaza Monomotapa, Trevor Barnard, CEO of Kuvimba Mining House, and Hon. Dr. Jenfan Muswere, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, underscored the central role of responsible stewardship and transparent engagement in the industry.
Barnard highlighted that mining in Zimbabwe goes far beyond extraction of minerals. “The mining industry serves as the custodian of our nation’s mineral resources,” he said, stressing that sustainable development requires a commitment not just to economic viability, but to environmental protection and social responsibility. He urged companies to embed integrity in every decision, foster cross-sectoral collaboration, and engage stakeholders meaningfully to build lasting trust.
“Trust is not built overnight. It’s earned through consistent actions, transparent communication, and a genuine commitment to shared values,” Barnard noted, quoting Nelson Mandela: “The time is always right to do right.” He lauded the media for their role in shaping the narrative of Zimbabwe mining, emphasizing that accurate storytelling strengthens public trust and accountability.
Echoing these sentiments, Minister Muswere commended journalists for documenting the sector’s progress and challenges, noting that their work bridges communities, investors, and policymakers. “Through their stories, journalists shine a light on innovation, community empowerment, and environmental care,” he said, highlighting the vital role of media in advancing Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 2 and Vision 2030.
Muswere also called on the mining sector to embrace new technologies and digital platforms to showcase the industry’s renaissance globally. “Excellence in journalism is not merely about recognition but about responsibility,” he said. “Together, we can strengthen understanding, foster collaboration, and advance sustainable growth for the benefit of present and future generations.”
The speeches collectively framed a powerful vision for Zimbabwe’s mining industry — one that balances economic growth with social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and ethical governance. As Barnard concluded, “By upholding our values and working transparently, we can build a lasting trust and drive sustainable growth for the Zimbabwe mining sector.”
