ZIMBABWEANS DIE IN FOREIGN WAR RECRUITMENT SCHEME, GOVT WARNS

Government has raised alarm over what it describes as a dangerous and deceptive recruitment scheme targeting Zimbabwean citizens for foreign wars, confirming that lives have already been lost.

The Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Zhemu Soda, said authorities are increasingly concerned about Zimbabweans being lured into joining foreign armed forces under false pretences.

“We are witnessing a troubling and dangerous trend,” said Soda. “The recruitment of Zimbabwean citizens who end up in foreign armies and participate in armed conflict beyond our borders is not a matter of legitimate military service.”

He warned that the operations behind the recruitment resemble organised exploitation networks rather than formal enlistment processes.

“It is a sophisticated scheme of deception, exploitation, and human trafficking that has already resulted in the loss of Zimbabwean life,” he said.

The Minister revealed that dozens of Zimbabweans have died after being caught up in these arrangements, with many reportedly deployed to conflict zones linked to Russia’s ongoing military engagements.

“It is with profound sorrow that I confirm to the nation that Zimbabwean nationals have lost their lives on foreign battlefields after being ensnared in this scheme,” he added.

Government is now urging citizens, particularly young job seekers, to be cautious of offers promising lucrative employment or military opportunities abroad, warning that such deals may be fronts for illegal recruitment into conflict zones.

Authorities say investigations are underway to identify and dismantle networks involved in the recruitment process, while efforts are also being made to raise public awareness about the risks.

The development comes amid growing global concern over the use of foreign nationals in armed conflicts, often through informal or coercive recruitment channels.

Government has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and called on Zimbabweans to report suspicious recruitment activities to law enforcement agencies.
