The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old woman in Zvishavane on charges of infanticide after she allegedly strangled her newborn daughter and buried the body in her yard. The incident reportedly took place on October 27, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., in Village Takaendesa under Chief Masunda.
Speaking to Great Dyke News, ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the woman, identified as Talent Sibanda, was confronted by her uncle, Peterson Tauro, on November 2, after he heard rumors that she was no longer pregnant. During the conversation, Sibanda reportedly admitted to giving birth to a baby girl on October 27, then strangling and burying the child.
Tauro reported the matter to the police, who then exhumed the baby’s body from the yard and transported it to Zvishavane District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Sibanda is now in police custody as investigations continue.
Police have urged the public to report such incidents and seek support through available social services, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children’s lives.
