Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mangaliso Ndlovu, has emphasized the Government’s intensified efforts to combat smuggling, highlighting a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy aimed at protecting both consumers and legitimate businesses.
Speaking at a post cabinet media briefing, Minister Ndlovu revealed that a special task force established last year conducted more than 4,000 inspections, resulting in the seizure of 4,831 contraband items.
He underscored the dangers posed by smuggled goods, noting that they not only undermine local industries but also present significant health risks to the public.
“Individuals who engage in illicit trade risk losing their investments as smuggled goods are subject to confiscation,” the Minister warned.
Addressing the challenges posed by currency fluctuations and the cost of doing business, Minister Ndlovu said the Government has implemented measures that are expected to deliver full impact by the end of the year.
“The fight against smuggling is critical for ensuring a fair business environment and safeguarding the health of our citizens,” he added, urging all stakeholders to comply with regulations and support legitimate trade.
