The biggest platinum producer, Zimplats scooped the Health and Safety Company of the Year Award and the Platinum Group Producer of the Year Award at the inaugural Mining Industry Sector Awards held yesterday.
In an interview with Great Dyke News 24 at the State House yesterday, Zimplats Head of Corporate Affairs Busi Chindove said the company’s focus is now anchored on the $1.8 billion expansion programme as well as the establishment of a base metal refinery.
“We are really honored and humbled by getting this award, it’s a humbling experience for us as a company because we know that achieving an award of this nature takes a lot of support from different stakeholders.
“We have excellent support from our board, our shareholders, our employees so we thank the government for creating a conducive environment where mining is able to contribute meaningfully to our country’s economy.
“Going forward, our focus is obviously on the $1. 8 billion expansion programme that we have talked about in the past and we also want to continue to contribute to the community in which we operate because we are grateful for the social license that they give us which enables us to operate.
“Most importantly, we are humbled for receiving the safety award because safety is the biggest issue for us, so it’s a recognition for the efforts that we make to ensure that all our employees are able to go safely to their families, and it’s an acknowledgment we appreciate,” she said.
Zimplats is the leading mining company in Zimbabwe specialising in Platinum Group Metals such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium. Zimplats signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Zimbabwe in 2021 that will see the company investing $1.8 billion to expand its operations by the year 2025.
