In response to the recent health crisis at Mkoba Teacher’s College in Gweru, health authorities have taken the decisive step of temporarily closing the institution. This announcement was made by the Midlands Provincial Medical Director, Dr. Mary Muchekeza, in an official statement.
The closure comes as health officials intensify efforts to assess the prevailing health situation at the higher learning institution. Dr. Muchekeza confirmed that a total of 20 stool samples were collected for testing, including assessments for cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Fortunately, all results returned negative. However, epidemiological investigations revealed that three out of five water samples collected were deemed unfit for human consumption.
The decision to temporarily shut down the college is a precautionary measure, considering the gravity of the situation. In 2018, Gweru experienced a diarrheal outbreak that significantly impacted Mkoba areas 15, 18, and 20, resulting in 11 recorded deaths and over 500 individuals being admitted under home care.
Dr. Muchekeza’s statement highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “Reference is hereby made to the ongoing diarrheal outbreak at Mkoba Teachers College. As of November 13, 2023, at 1800hrs, the college had reported a total of 508 diarrheal cases. In light of the findings and challenges mentioned above, we believe it is in the best interest of public health to take immediate and decisive action.”
