The Save Our Environment Trust (SOET) has unveiled a new plastic processing machine in Gweru, marking a significant advancement in the organizationās environmental goals.
The launch ceremony featured key addresses from SOET officials, including Tendai Forichi, Acting Director of Infrastructure Planning and Environment Management.
Cosmas Nemutenzi, SOETās Administrative Director, also spoke about the organizationās focus on plastic waste reduction.
Plastic pollution is a global crisis, with startling statistics underscoring its impact. Since 1950, global plastic production has skyrocketed from 2.3 million tons to over 460 million tons annually, with approximately 430 million tons produced each year. A staggering two-thirds of this quickly becomes waste. Recycling efforts have been inadequate, with only about 9% of all plastic waste ever produced being recycled. The majority ends up in landfills (46%), as litter (22%), or is incinerated (17%). Projections indicate that by 2050, plastic production could double, with plastic waste in the oceans potentially outweighing all the fish.
