Senegalese authorities have discovered at least 30 decomposing bodies on a boat drifting 70km off Dakar. The migrants are believed to have been adrift for days before fishermen found the vessel.
An investigation is underway to determine the boat’s origin and passenger count. The tragedy follows a surge in attempts to reach Spain’s Canary Islands, driven by poverty and overfishing.
Nearly 1,000 migrants died on this route last year, with numbers expected to be higher.
