Kwekwe City Council is grappling with heavy fines from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for discharging untreated sewage into local water bodies, according to Finance Director Rejoice Maweni-Dandira.
The council has begun maintenance work at its sewer pump stations to curb future discharges and avoid further penalties.
Meanwhile, the council has proposed reintroducing a $12 annual dog tax in its 2025 budget. Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga, explained that the move comes amid rising cases of stray dog bites.
“We had stopped collecting the tax but are reconsidering due to the growing problem of stray animals,” he said. The proposal is awaiting approval.
