In an alarming crackdown on drug-related crimes, Gweru police have arrested 148 individuals for drug offenses from January to September this year. The rising numbers highlight the pressing issue of drug and substance abuse in the community, with local authorities warning of its severe impact on public health and safety.


Speaking at a drug and substance abuse awareness campaign in Gweru, Officer Commanding Gweru District, Chief Superintendent Enock Chishiri, revealed that 42 of those arrested were suspected to be drug peddlers, underscoring the reach of illegal drug networks.

“The figures are concerning,” said Chief Superintendent Chishiri. “We’re seeing both peddling and consumption on the rise, creating a dual crisis that threatens individuals and the broader community.”


Out of the total arrests, 106 were people apprehended for drug and substance use, signaling an urgent need for both preventative measures and rehabilitation options. Authorities continue to urge residents to report drug activities and participate in efforts to curb this troubling trend.
