Zimbabwe’s Major Dams Reach 90.3% Capacity After Strong Inflows

by Takudzwa Mahove

Zimbabwe’s major dams are now holding an average of 90.3% of their total capacity, reflecting a strong recovery in water levels following recent inflows, according to the latest update released on 2 February 2026.

Data from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) shows that several key reservoirs across the country are now at or near full supply, significantly improving national water security for urban supply, irrigation, power generation and livestock.

Among the largest dams, Tugwi-Mukosi and Lake Mutirikwi are both at 100% capacity, while Manyuchi is at 99.5% and Manjirenji at 85.6%. Sebakwe Dam stands at 87.7%, Osborne at 82.9% and Manyame at 82.4%. Harare’s main water source, Lake Chivero, is at 77.7%, while Mazvikadei is at 65.7%.

Several smaller dams have also reached full capacity, including Arcadia, Mtshabezi, Bubi-Lupane, Masembura, Silalabuhwa, Harava, Siya and Seke. Upper Insiza and Manyuchi are both just below full supply at 99.5%.

However, some reservoirs remain significantly low. Upper Ncema is at 40.7%, Lower Ncema at 36.8%, Mzingwane at 36.1%, Mwenje at 23.1%, Inyankuni at 19.8% and Mazowe at just 11.2%, highlighting uneven rainfall distribution across catchment areas.

Water authorities say the overall national average of 90.3% represents a positive outlook for the remainder of the rainy season, with benefits expected for agriculture and water availability in most regions. However, communities in areas served by low-performing dams have been urged to continue using water sparingly.

ZINWA has advised stakeholders, including local authorities, farmers and water users, to remain vigilant as further rainfall could push some dams beyond safe operating levels, increasing the risk of spillway releases and downstream flooding.
