A harrowing incident that underscores the dangers of rural crime, 38-year-old Edmore Mavesere from Section 15, Triangle, was fatally stabbed on November 25, 2024, while protecting his garden.
According to a press statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Masvingo Province on December 11, 2024, Mavesere was with a friend irrigating maize when they spotted four men stealing from nearby gardens. The thieves, armed with spears and carrying sacks to store the stolen maize, fled upon being spotted. In their escape, one of the assailants stabbed Mavesere in the chest with a spear when he attempted to apprehend one of them.
Despite receiving immediate assistance and being rushed to Collin Saunders Hospital in Triangle, Mavesere succumbed to his injuries on December 9, 2024. His body was then taken to Chiredzi Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The police have yet to apprehend the suspects, who remain at large. The ZRP has issued a public appeal for information that could lead to the arrest of these individuals.
