Communal farmers under Chief Mapanzure in Zvishavane have commended platinum group metals (PGMs) producer Mimosa Mining Company for its extensive support in bolstering livestock farming through a comprehensive revitalization programme. The initiative, encompasses dip tank rehabilitation, artificial insemination, and animal health assistance.
Speaking at a recent event in Zvishavane, Chief Mapanzure applauded Mimosa’s intervention, stating that the miner’s efforts are not only transforming livelihoods but also aligning with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 of achieving an upper middle-income economy.
Beneficiaries that spoke to Great Dyke News said cattle are a bank for communal farmers, and Mimosa’s livestock revitalization programme is a game-changer, ensuring that farmers have a sustainable and commercially viable herd.
Strategic Impact of the Programme
Mimosa’s livestock revitalization programme is being implemented in partnership with the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society and the Department of Livestock in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development. The initiative seeks to enhance cattle quality and community resilience through targeted interventions.
To date, a total of 600 bulls and 177 heifers have been distributed to communities in Zvishavane and Mberengwa. Between 2020 and 2023, 746 cows underwent artificial insemination, yielding 450 calves, translating to an impressive 59% success rate. Furthermore, over 2,000 calves have been received from the breeding bulls and artificial insemination programmes, strengthening the genetic quality of local herds.
Recognizing the importance of disease prevention in safeguarding livestock assets, Mimosa has refurbished 10 dip tanks across Zvishavane district, ensuring that farmers have access to effective tick-borne disease control. Additionally, structured training programmes on cattle management have been rolled out to empower farmers with best practices, reinforcing long-term sustainability.

Scaling Up to Commercialization
Mimosa is now setting its sights on commercializing communal livestock farming by creating market linkages, value addition opportunities, and enhanced income generation models. The miner is working closely with stakeholders to ensure that farmers transition from subsistence to a commercially integrated livestock economy.
With Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector being a key driver of rural development, Mimosa’s livestock revitalization initiative stands as a blueprint for corporate social investment that delivers tangible economic transformation.
