Shurugwi Mayor, Councillor Fanuel Machiya, has commended the Mining Industry Pension Fund (MIPF) for its continued investment in the fast-growing mining town, saying developments such as the new MIPF Mall have transformed the local landscape and created opportunities for residents.

Speaking as the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke passed through Shurugwi on its second day, Mayor Machiya said the mall stands as a “symbol of progress” and demonstrates what can be achieved through strong partnerships between local authorities, corporates, and the community.

“What MIPF has done for us as a local authority is truly impressive,” said Machiya. “Before this complex was built, our people had to travel far for basic services, but now we have shops, pharmacies, and even a farmers’ market right here in Shurugwi. This development has brought business and convenience closer to our residents.”

He said MIPF’s investments have also created employment opportunities for locals, with companies operating from the complex encouraged to hire from within the community.

“Besides building infrastructure, MIPF has helped empower our people by ensuring that many of those employed here are from Shurugwi,” he added. “This is a commendable approach that supports inclusive growth.”

Mayor Machiya described Shurugwi as a rapidly expanding town with significant investment potential, highlighting areas such as Impali, where MIPF has also developed medium-density residential stands.

“Shurugwi has vast opportunities — for housing, for business, and for industry,” he said. “We are calling on more developers to come here and help us decongest major cities by investing in modern housing and infrastructure.”

He further noted that Shurugwi’s location along the Great Dyke corridor — a mineral-rich geological belt — makes it an ideal investment hub, aligning with Vision 2030 goals for economic growth and urban development.

“As the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke passes through our town, it reminds us of the power of partnerships — between government, business, and the community — in driving development and wellness,” said Mayor Machiya.

The MIPF is one of the key partners of the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke, which promotes health, opportunity, and charity while supporting education for underprivileged children through the Gifted Children Foundation.
