Artisanal and Small Scale Miners (ASM) in the Great Dyke are being urged to abide by the laid-out mining safety regulations to curb the unnecessary loss of life through mining accidents.
Speaking to Great Dyke News 24 reporter Priscilla Makondo, ZMF spokesperson Dosman Mangisi said the spike in accidents in recent months demands that miners raise their safety standards.
“We cannot stop mining operations, so we educate the miners. Miners should always practice safety and avoid areas of danger. These rains will come and go but they should make sure that they work in a safe environment. They should work in protected areas, if the area is not safe you simply cordon off that area until it is safe.’’ said Mangisi.
He highlighted that miners can do more to improve infrastructure and safety standards at their mines.
Heavy downpours at the end of November and in the first week of December have been accompanied by a number of mine collapses which have left a number of miners trapped underground. Accidents have been reported in Bindura, Esigodini, Mutasa and other mining areas.
