An asylum seeker convicted of manslaughter after piloting a boat in the English Channel where four people drowned has lost his appeal.

Ibrahima Bah, sentenced to nine and a half years in February, argued that smugglers had forced him to steer the overcrowded dinghy, but the Court of Appeal ruled his challenge was not “arguable.”

Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr upheld the original trial’s findings, rejecting claims that the passengers’ decision to board the boat broke the chain of causation.

The inflatable vessel, carrying 45 people despite a capacity for 20, capsized during the 2022 attempted crossing.
