A violent attack in Village Karikoga under Chief Sayi in Gokwe has resulted in serious injuries to a 72-year-old man and his 27-year-old daughter. The assault occurred in the early hours of 20 August 2024.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 01:00 hours when Matare Karikoga (46) forcibly entered the room where his estranged wife, Mailet Chikwiko (27), was staying. After Mailet had left their home the previous day following a domestic dispute, Matare pursued her to her parents’ homestead.
Upon arrival, Matare attacked Mailet with an axe, delivering multiple blows to her head and body. Her father, Solomon Chikwiko (72), who heard his daughter’s cries for help, rushed to intervene but was also struck repeatedly by Matare, sustaining severe injuries to his head and hands. Matare further assaulted Mailet with a stick.
Both Chikwiko and his daughter are currently receiving treatment at Gokwe District Hospital, where they remain in serious condition. Matare Karikoga is currently at large, and police are actively investigating the case.
The police urge the public to seek non-violent solutions to disputes and to report any information that could assist in locating the suspect.
