A Shurugwi man, Tinashe Dycool Mawere (22), has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murder of a fellow patron following a violent altercation at a local beerhall. The sentencing took place at the High Court sitting in Gweru on September 23, 2024.
The incident, which occurred on May 22, 2023, at Taona Bottle Store, Chinho Business Centre in Shurugwi, escalated from a minor misunderstanding between the accused and the victim, who was 25 years old at the time. What began as a heated argument soon turned deadly when Mawere drew an okapi knife, launching a brutal attack on the now-deceased.
According to court records, Mawere stabbed the victim multiple timesāonce in the back, left thigh, left shoulder, and left eye, and once on the forehead. The violent assault continued with two more stabs to the abdomen and three on the right hand. The victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Authorities promptly arrested Mawere after a police report was filed, leading to the murder trial that concluded with his conviction. The court handed down a 23-year prison sentence for the crime.
