President Emmerson Mnangagwa has underscored the importance of discipline within the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), describing it as a “key cog” that guides the actions of law enforcement officers.
Speaking at a recent event, the President warned officers against succumbing to temptations that could compromise their integrity and judgment.
This comes at a time when several police and municipal officers have been convicted of corruption, abuse of office, and assault, raising concerns about misconduct within security and law enforcement agencies.
In one case, two Mbare police officers, Naume Dube (31) and Victoria Shonhiva (36), were convicted of criminal abuse of duty after soliciting bribes from motorists. The officers were caught accepting US1 from each motorist passing through the Mbare Police Station’s main gate, with a total of US $120 recovered as evidence.
Similarly, two traffic officers from Chinhoyi, Desire Mangombe (30) and Macdonald Tapesa (32), were convicted of demanding a US$60 weekly bribe from a transport operator in exchange for free passage. The officers were arrested in a trap operation involving marked US dollar notes.
In a separate incident, two Harare municipal officers, Peter Muwonde (41) and Tapiwa Bere (40), were convicted of assaulting a vendor, Shepherd Mavhiza, during a routine operation. The officers were fined US$200 each for their actions.
These cases highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in maintaining public trust. President Mnangagwa’s call for discipline serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and ethical conduct among officers.
