President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reiterated his concerns over the misuse of social media, warning against the spread of graphic and insensitive content, particularly footage of road traffic accidents.
The President made the remarks while addressing thousands gathered at Maphisa Stadium in Matobo District, where he led the nation in commemorating the Zimbabwe Independence Day. This year’s event marked the country’s 46th anniversary of independence, a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s liberation history.
Speaking during the celebrations, President Mnangagwa expressed “grave concern” over what he described as the increasing abuse of digital platforms by “unscrupulous persons and groups.” He condemned the practice of recording accident scenes and sharing the images online, calling it “totally unacceptable, inhumane and against the values of Ubuntu.”
The Independence Day commemorations brought together citizens from across the country, blending reflection on Zimbabwe’s past with calls for unity and responsible citizenship in the present. The President emphasized the importance of preserving national values, urging Zimbabweans to embrace empathy and respect both offline and online.
His remarks have since sparked conversations around digital ethics, with many agreeing that the rise of viral content culture must be balanced with compassion and dignity for victims and their families.
