Local gold buyer Betterbrands has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting football development in Zimbabwe, saying sport plays an important role in addressing the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse among young people.
The company made the pledge in Kwekwe during the unveiling of its sponsorship for Kwekwe United, a move aimed at helping the club strengthen its ambitions of reaching the Premier Soccer League.
Speaking at the event, Betterbrands representative Musa Gwasira said the company believes investing in football is a way of creating opportunities for young people while helping communities tackle social challenges.
Gwasira said Betterbrands hopes its support will help the club grow and eventually secure promotion to the top-flight league.
He added that the company is committed to supporting football initiatives that keep young people engaged in positive activities.
“We are really working on improving our football in the country,” he said. “There is also a war against drug and substance abuse. We want the youth to have something to do, especially those who are talented in sport, so that we reduce idleness among our young people.”
Betterbrands says its growing involvement in sport is part of its broader effort to contribute to community development while strengthening Zimbabwe’s football structures.
The company is one of Zimbabwe’s largest privately owned enterprises and is widely known for its gold trading operations, particularly through Betterbrands Jewellery, which operates a network of small-to-medium scale gold mining operations and trading activities across the country.
Beyond mining, the diversified group also runs Betterbrands Construction, which focuses on infrastructure development and construction projects, as well as Betterbrands Petroleum, which supplies both renewable and conventional energy solutions.
The company is also involved in borehole drilling and solar energy projects, helping provide water and sustainable energy solutions to communities while supporting small-scale agricultural initiatives such as nutritional gardens.
With its latest investment in football, Betterbrands says it hopes to play a role not only in developing the sport but also in creating opportunities that can steer young people away from drugs and toward productive activities.
