Tropical Cyclone Chido has caused widespread destruction in Mozambique, affecting over 174,000 people, including 90,000 children, according to UNICEF. The storm struck Cabo Delgado province over the weekend, destroying 35,000 homes, 186 classrooms, and 20 health facilities. Thousands of families have been displaced, with rural areas hardest hit.

Already grappling with conflict, cholera, and drought, Mozambique faces heightened humanitarian challenges. The cyclone’s aftermath has disrupted electricity, water access, and communication systems, further endangering vulnerable communities.

UN agencies, including UNICEF and the World Health Organization, are delivering emergency aid while conducting assessments to address immediate needs. Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated $4 million to Mozambique for early response efforts.

The cyclone also impacted Mayotte and southern Malawi, leaving thousands homeless and worsening existing vulnerabilities. Humanitarian agencies are scaling up support across affected regions.
