The Government of Zimbabwe has tightened controls on the importation of certain steel products following the Gazetting of Statutory Instrument 46 of 2025, which amends the Control of Goods (Open General Import Licence) Notice of 1974.
In a notice issued by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, the government has added several steel-related items to the list of goods requiring import licences, a move expected to regulate market entry and support local industry.
The new statutory instrument adds the following products to the First Schedule of goods that are now subject to licensing:
⢠Flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel (Tariff Code: 7211.19.00)
⢠Bars and rods of iron or non-alloy steel, including those hot-rolled or twisted after rolling (Tariff Codes: 7214.20.00, 7214.30.00, 7214.99.00)
⢠Angles, shapes, and sections of iron or non-alloy steel (Tariff Codes: 7216.10.00, 7216.21.00, 7216.22.00)
According to the explanatory note attached to the statutory instrument, import licences will now be mandatory for the above products under the eight-digit tariff codes specified.
