Dinson Iron and Steel Company says it has commenced production at its giant steel plant, which is rapidly nearing 99% completion of its first phase.
Joseph Shoko, the company’s public relations manager, shared insights on the progress: “We are currently in stage one, and we are almost at the finish line. The major component, the blast furnace, has been completed, allowing us to start production.”
He said as of now, Disco is producing pig iron and billets, marking a significant step forward in its operations.
This massive steel plant is set to become one of Africa’s largest integrated steelworks, developed by Disco, one of the three local subsidiaries of China’s Tsingshan Holdings Group Limited, a global leader in stainless steel production. Tsingshan also owns Dinson Colliery in Hwange and the ferrochrome plant, Afrochine Smelting Limited, in Selous.
The investment in iron and steel is strategically positioning Zimbabwe as a competitive player in the global steel manufacturing landscape. Projections indicate that the Disco plant will produce 600,000 metric tonnes of products in its first phase, with capacity increasing to 1.2 million tonnes in the second phase, 3.2 million tonnes in the third phase, and ultimately reaching 5 million tonnes per year in the final phase.
