Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, Zimbabwe’s largest gold producer, is intensifying exploration efforts at its Bindura site to extend its operational life and boost processing capacity. Managing Director Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya told Mining Zimbabwe that extending the mine’s life beyond the current five years is crucial for strategic planning.

Maseva-Shayawabaya said the goal is to extend the mine’s lifespan. Depending on exploration results, we may also increase the plant’s capacity.

The parent company, Kuvimba Mining House (KMH), plans to invest US$40 million in its gold operations, which include Freda Rebecca, Shamva, and Jena Mines, to enhance production and efficiency.

Maseva-Shayawabaya added that about 50% of the capital expenditure will come from internal cash flows, with the balance needing to be raised.

For the fiscal year ending March 2024, the group produced 104,000 ounces of gold and aims to increase this to 105,000 ounces in the current year.

“Male MPs need to actively support initiatives like HeForShe to ensure we reverse the trend of decreasing female representation in Parliament,” said Senator Mbowa. Her appeal underscores the urgency of addressing gender disparities and fostering a more inclusive political environment.

Speaking on a related issue, Chikanga MP Lynette Karenyi-Kore highlighted internal party biases as a significant barrier to women’s progress in politics.

“Internal party bias is a major obstacle preventing women from advancing in political careers,” she stated, urging political parties to reform their structures and practices to be more supportive of female candidates.

The calls from Senator Mbowa and MP Karenyi-Kore come amid growing concerns over the declining number of women in political positions. They stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between male and female legislators to create a balanced and equitable political landscape.

As gender equity in politics remains a pressing issue, the involvement of male champions is seen as vital to achieving meaningful progress. The He For She campaign, launched by the United Nations, aims to engage men and boys as advocates for gender equality, recognizing their influence in bringing about lasting change.
