Tinevimbo Nyika of Kufazvinei Village, Chief Chireya, in Gokwe North, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his 69-year-old father, following accusations of witchcraft.
Appearing before the High Court sitting in Gokwe, the 23-year-old Nyika was found guilty of killing his father on November 18, 2023, during a dispute at their homestead.
The confrontation arose when Nyika accused his father of practicing witchcraft, blaming him for allegedly bewitching one of his brothers.
The situation escalated when the now-deceased father returned from the field. An altercation ensued, during which the father struck Nyika on the knee with a metal rod.
Nyika overpowered him and retaliated by hitting him on the head. As the father tried to escape, Nyika pursued and continued to assault him, repeatedly striking him on the head and body with the rod until he succumbed to his injuries.
Nyika was arrested following a police report, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
