The government has imposed a nationwide ban on alluvial mining, effective November 29, 2024. This decision, announced by Information ,Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Honourable Jenfan Muswere, was gazetted as part of measures to address environmental concerns.
Alluvial mining, which involves extracting minerals from riverbeds and floodplains, has long been criticized for its destructive impact. Its ill effects include extensive deforestation, water pollution, and the disruption of aquatic ecosystems.
The ban is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable mining practices and preserve Zimbabwe’s natural resources for future generations. This move signals the government’s commitment to combating environmental degradation caused by unregulated mining activities.
