Zimbabwe is working on plans to construct an airport near Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe as part of efforts to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements for hosting international matches and tournaments.
Speaking on the initiative, Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Anselem Sanyatwe said the project will be undertaken in collaboration with the Ministries of Transport and Infrastructural Development, as well as Provincial Affairs.
The proposed airport forms part of a broader infrastructure push aimed at bringing the stadium and surrounding facilities up to international standards. Key priorities also include the development of five-star accommodation, improved road networks, and enhanced medical services—essential requirements for CAF certification.
Sanyatwe clarified that while the airport project falls under the mandate of the Transport Ministry, his ministry will play a coordinating role to ensure all sporting infrastructure requirements are met.
The development signals Zimbabwe’s renewed efforts to upgrade its sports facilities and position itself to host continental competitions once again.
