A Guinea court has sentenced Mohamed Diané, a former defence minister under ex-President Alpha Condé, to five years in prison for corruption, embezzlement, and money laundering. Diané, who served from 2015 to 2021, must also pay a $58.5m fine, with his bank accounts and properties in Conakry and Kankan confiscated for their unexplained origins.
Detained since May 2022, Diané’s sentencing is part of the military junta’s anti-corruption campaign following its 2021 coup. Led by Gen Mamady Doumbouya, the junta has targeted over 180 former officials, including Condé, to address corruption in the impoverished West African nation.
