The streets surrounding Gweru Civic Centre will come alive on Friday, April 4, as the city participates in the international Good Deeds Day celebration. From 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM, residents can access free health services, attend skills workshops, and enjoy family-friendly entertainment as part of this worldwide movement promoting volunteerism and community service.
Organized by the Good Deeds Gweru Network in collaboration with multiple government agencies and local NGOs, the event transforms the civic center into a bustling hub of activity. Attendees will find health professionals offering free consultations in one section, while nearby, aspiring models prepare for a fashion showcase and children queue excitedly for face painting. The aroma of cooking will waft from the food competition area where community members display their culinary skills.
“This goes beyond charity,” explains Primrose Zibonda of Save Our Environment Trust, one of the lead organizers. “We’re creating a space where every resident, regardless of means, can both give and receive. The doctor volunteering her time gets as much from helping as the patient receiving care.”
The global initiative, launched in 2007 by Israeli businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison through her Ruach Tova foundation, has grown to include participants in 115 countries. Zimbabwe’s involvement dates back to 2011, with Gweru’s event representing one of the nation’s largest coordinated efforts.
By day’s end, organizers expect to have provided hundreds of free health screenings, connected dozens with social services, and most importantly, strengthened the bonds that hold this community together.
For those interested in participating, registration remains open through the event website or by contacting organizers directly. As Zibonda notes, “The beauty of Good Deeds Day is that everyone finds their own way to contribute – whether giving time, skills, or simply showing up with an open heart.”
