The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a tragic case of mob justice that resulted in the death of a man only identified as Bla Odza along Highway Road in Belvedere, Harare, on December 1, 2024.
According to police reports, Bla Odza and his alleged accomplice, Onias Marenga (20), were accused of stealing various clothes, which were reportedly loaded onto a pushcart. Tempers flared as an angry mob confronted the pair, delivering a brutal assault that left Bla Odza with severe injuries.
“Bla Odza sustained multiple bruises all over his body and became unconscious during the attack,” said a police spokesperson. He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Marenga reportedly escaped serious harm and is assisting police with investigations into the circumstances leading to the fatal mob attack.
The ZRP has urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “Mob justice is a crime. We strongly discourage individuals from resorting to violence in settling disputes. Anyone with information regarding this case should come forward to assist with investigations,” the spokesperson added.
