In a dramatic turn of events, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has apprehended five suspects involved in a meticulously staged armed robbery, recovering over $100,000 in cash. The brazen heist took place on August 4, 2024, at the 136-kilometre peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road in the Makumimavi area, Chivhu.

The suspects, identified as Richard Banda (23), Tawananyasha Nyengerai (21), Lionel Chipenzi (25), Harrison Chiinge (24), and Calos Muwani (23), orchestrated the robbery with precision. Posing as police officers, they intercepted a Toyota Hiace travelling from Bulawayo to Harare. The vehicle, driven by Banda and carrying the unsuspecting complainant, was stopped under the guise of a police check. Seizing the moment, the gang snatched a bag containing a staggering $193,900 in cash and a cellphone before speeding away in a Nissan Note with the registration number AGN 2303.

The unraveling of the plot began when astute detectives connected Banda to the crime. Under intense interrogation, he revealed his connection to his cousin, Nyengerai, and the rest of the gang. This breakthrough led to their swift capture and the recovery of $100,442 in stolen cash.

Further investigation uncovered that Banda had masterminded the robbery after receiving crucial information about the travel plans and cash transport from his employer. The ZRP has vowed to leave no stone unturned in bringing to justice all individuals involved in robbery syndicates and those leaking sensitive information about their employers’ financial movements.
