Invictus Energy Limited is poised for a transformative 2025, with CEO Scott Macmillan outlining a robust operational roadmap in a recent update, spotlighting key initiatives such as the impending gas-to-power pilot project and an aggressive exploration campaign at its Cabora Bassa Basin assets in Zimbabwe.

Central to these developments is a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) inked in 2024 with Dallaglio Investments, operators of the Eureka Gold Mine, and Himoinsa Southern Africa, a power generation specialist. This agreement targets a paradigm shift in the mine’s energy matrix, transitioning from reliance on diesel and intermittent grid electricity to a sustainable, gas-fired power supply harnessed from the prolific Mukuyu gas field, approximately 50 kilometers distant.

In his statement, Macmillan emphasized, “This pilot project will not only provide an alternative power source but will also enable us to acquire extended reservoir data and validate the commercial feasibility of establishing a nascent gas sector in Zimbabwe.”

The initiative underscores Invictus’ commitment to leveraging its Mukuyu discovery—estimated at 230 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) or 1.3 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas—to underpin regional energy security and economic diversification. Zimbabwe’s gas potential remains largely untapped, with the Mukuyu field representing a pivotal step toward addressing the country’s chronic energy shortages, exacerbated by frequent power outages.

Globally, natural gas consumption reached approximately 4,000 billion cubic meters in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), with Africa contributing less than 5% of this total, highlighting Zimbabwe’s potential to carve out a niche in the global market if its reserves are developed.

To underpin this progression, Invictus has fortified its regulatory position by completing a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), expanding on the seminal 2019 baseline study, which remains one of Zimbabwe’s most extensive environmental evaluations. This approval, granted by the Zimbabwe Environmental Management Agency (EMA), clears the path for gas extraction, liquefaction, and transportation operations across Special Grant 4571 and adjacent Exclusive Prospecting Orders (EPOs) 1848 and 1849. The company is now poised to finalize pilot production planning, secure requisite permits, and engage potential offtake partners, positioning Invictus as a pivotal player in unlocking Zimbabwe’s untapped hydrocarbon potential while mitigating environmental and social risks through rigorous due diligence.

In a significant governmental development, this month President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed Caleb Makwiranzou as the Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, effective February 13, 2025, with specific responsibility for Oil and Gas Research, including other Strategic Minerals Exploration.
