The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has raised concerns over the declining water levels at Kariba Dam, with usable water storage for power generation now at a critical 2.4%.
As of November 18, 2024, the lake level stood at 476.03 meters, holding just 3.71 billion cubic meters (BCM) of usable live storage. This marks a significant drop from the 477.68 meters and 9.81 BCM (15.15%) recorded on the same date last year.
The reduction has been attributed to low inflows and fluctuating rainfall patterns in the lake’s immediate catchment area. The ZRA reiterated that Kariba Lake is designed to operate between 475.50 meters and 488.50 meters for optimal hydropower generation, warning that current levels are nearing the lower operational limit.
This development raises fresh concerns for the region, as Kariba Dam is a critical source of hydropower for both Zimbabwe and Zambia. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid fears of potential power outages.
