Kenyan senators have voted to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office, despite his absence from the impeachment trial, citing medical reasons.
Gachagua, widely known as “Riggy G,” was expected to appear before the Senate to defend himself after pleading not guilty to 11 charges the previous day. However, his lawyer informed the Senate that Gachagua had been admitted to The Karen Hospital, suffering from chest pains, and requested a postponement.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Senate opted to proceed with the trial in his absence, prompting the defence team to walk out of the chamber in protest. The impeachment has marked one of the most turbulent political episodes in Kenya’s recent history.
