A 52-year-old truck driver died in a tragic accident after his vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Ngezi River, submerging completely.
The incident occurred on April 10, 2026, at around 1600 hours along the Masvingo–Mbalabala Road near the 113km peg at Ngezi River Bridge in Zvishavane.
Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the deceased, Silas Nyengetera of Tarusenga Village under Chief Mazungunye in Bikita, was driving a heavy Shacman truck towing two trailers when disaster struck. According to police, the vehicle veered off the road before crashing into the river, with both the truck and trailers sinking beneath the water.
Nyengetera, who was alone in the vehicle, became trapped inside as the truck submerged.
Police officers from Zvishavane, working together with the Sub Aqua Unit, attended the scene and launched a recovery operation. His body was later retrieved from the submerged vehicle the following day, April 11, at around 1430 hours.
Authorities have once again urged motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads to avoid such fatal incidents.
