PALAWANI — A few years ago, it was a small gathering of about 30 people brought together by a shared commitment to health, wellness and community.
Today, the Palawani Wellness & Fun Day has transformed into one of the Great Dyke region’s flagship corporate and community events, attracting more than 400 participants and drawing support from some of Zimbabwe’s leading mining, business and financial institutions.
Held at the picturesque Palawani Lakeworld Resort on Saturday, the 2026 edition brought together miners, executives, entrepreneurs, community leaders, families and fitness enthusiasts for a day that celebrated healthy living, networking, recreation and social responsibility.
The event featured a range of activities including 21-kilometre and 10-kilometre runs, walking and cycling challenges, Zumba sessions and team-building competitions, creating opportunities for participants of all ages and fitness levels to get involved.
What has increasingly set the event apart, however, is its ability to bring together different sectors of the Great Dyke economy in an informal environment where conversations extend beyond business and focus on people, communities and wellbeing.
As participants navigated the various activities throughout the day, the event also provided a platform for key industry stakeholders to engage directly with miners and communities.
Among the organisations supporting the event was Fidelity Gold Refinery, which praised miners across the Great Dyke for their continued contribution to community development initiatives and for supporting Zimbabwe’s formal gold marketing system.
Speaking during the event, a Fidelity representative thanked miners for helping make the wellness challenge a success and encouraged them to continue delivering their gold through official channels.
The representative said Fidelity remains committed to improving access to formal gold markets by expanding its network of buying centres across the country.
The expansion, he said, is intended to make it easier for miners to sell their gold legally and benefit from the services offered through the country’s sole authorised gold buyer.
The message resonated strongly with many participants, particularly those from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector, which has become a major contributor to Zimbabwe’s gold output in recent years.
The event also highlighted the importance of planning for life beyond active employment.
Mining Industry Pension Fund Deputy Principal Officer (Legal and Operations) Mr Laurence Tafadzwa Karumazondo used the platform to encourage greater participation in pension and retirement schemes.
Addressing participants, Karumazondo thanked sponsors, stakeholders and organisers for supporting an event that continues to grow in scale and impact each year.
He said retirement planning remains one of the most important but often overlooked aspects of financial wellbeing, particularly within physically demanding industries such as mining.
Karumazondo urged miners and workers across the sector to take advantage of pension products that can provide financial security long after active employment has ended.
His remarks tied neatly into the broader wellness theme of the event, which seeks to promote not only physical health but also financial wellness and long-term sustainability for individuals and families.
Away from the exhibitions, networking sessions and stakeholder engagements, the competitive spirit was alive throughout the day.
Participants pushed themselves through challenging courses and events, cheered on by colleagues, friends and family members.
One of the standout performances came in the men’s 10-kilometre race, where Lloyd Ngavaite crossed the finish line first after weeks of preparation.
Ngavaite said his victory was the result of disciplined training and determination.
His performance was met with enthusiastic applause from spectators, many of whom lined sections of the course to encourage participants.
For organisers, the success of the 2026 edition represents more than just increasing numbers.
It reflects growing recognition among companies, institutions and communities that employee wellness, work-life balance and community engagement are critical ingredients for long-term success.
As the Great Dyke continues to expand its role as one of Zimbabwe’s most important economic corridors, events such as the Palawani Wellness & Fun Day are helping strengthen the relationships that underpin that growth.
What began as a small wellness initiative has evolved into a major regional gathering where health meets business, recreation meets networking and communities come together to celebrate a shared future.
If attendance figures and stakeholder support are anything to go by, the Palawani Wellness & Fun Day’s growth story is only just beginning.
