Mining in Zimbabwe is more than a business; it is a responsibility, says Kuvimba Mining House CEO Trevor Barnard. Speaking at the 12th Mining Media Awards, Barnard highlighted the sector’s potential to drive sustainable development while building trust between companies, communities, and regulators.
Barnard urged mining operators to see sustainability as a strategic imperative rather than just a regulatory requirement, stressing that long-term success depends on environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and ethical decision-making.
He outlined a roadmap for strengthening public trust: uphold personal and corporate integrity, communicate openly and transparently, pursue business excellence, collaborate across sectors, and actively engage stakeholders. “Trust is earned through consistent actions and a genuine commitment to shared values,” he said.
Barnard also praised journalists for their role in shaping the public perception of the industry. “Authentic storytelling builds public confidence and ensures that both achievements and challenges are communicated with integrity,” he said.
Concluding on a note of collective responsibility, Barnard called for courage, innovation, and unity to create a mining industry that is economically successful, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable.
The awards ceremony, held under the theme “Stories of Growth & Sustainability”, recognized top mining journalists whose work informs, educates, and strengthens accountability in the sector.
