Kuvimba Mining House (KMH) is investing in a six-megawatt solar plant at its Bindura-based Freda Rebecca Gold Mine to enhance power security and boost production. This initiative is part of KMH’s broader strategy to address power shortages and operational challenges.

KMH, which operates a diversified portfolio across gold, bulk commodities, platinum group metals, and energy minerals, aims to increase its gold output by 8% in the current financial year, targeting 3,500 kg. The group’s flagship Freda Rebecca Gold Mine contributed 70% of the total gold production of 3,240 kg for the year ending March 31, 2024.

Zimbabwe’s mining sector is vital, contributing over 75% of national export earnings, with gold expected to generate $4 billion in the coming years. Despite record production of 35.3 tonnes in 2022, last year’s output fell to 30.1 tonnes due to power constraints and other operational issues.

KMH’s acting CEO, Engineer Trevor Barnard, highlighted the impact of load-shedding on mining operations and detailed plans for dedicated power lines and solar installations to mitigate these issues. The company is working with Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to optimize power supply and reduce costs.
