Kwekwe City Council is facing challenges in paying its monthly ZWL 4.6 million power bill to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), raising concerns over uninterrupted water supply.

The local authority’s Finance Director, Rejoice Maweni-Dandira, disclosed the situation during a 2025 Budget Consultative meeting with Ward Development Committees in Kwekwe.

Maweni-Dandira explained that the council is struggling to meet its financial obligations for electricity at the Water Treatment Plant, a critical facility responsible for supplying water to residents.

The financial burden comes at a time when many municipalities in Zimbabwe are grappling with mounting utility bills, often resulting in service disruptions. Water treatment plants depend heavily on consistent electricity, and any interruption in power supply could affect residents’ access to safe drinking water. Local authorities across the country have been calling for debt relief and restructuring from ZETDC to prevent critical service failures.
