Maruwa Keeps Goalkeeping Battle Open Ahead of MWOS Clash

TelOne FC coach Hebert Maruwa says the club will continue to select its goalkeeper based on training performance rather than a fixed first choice, reflecting a trend increasingly seen in modern football where even top clubs are still searching for stability between the posts.

Speaking ahead of TelOne’s match against MWOS, Maruwa explained that both Chris Mverechena and Takudzwa Chikosi remain strong contenders for the starting position.

“All the goalkeepers are good. Chris is experienced and Takudzwa is coming up. Whoever is doing well in training plays,” Maruwa said.

The Wifi Boys coach believes healthy competition in the goalkeeping department can strengthen the squad, a philosophy that mirrors the situation currently unfolding at several major clubs in Europe.

In England, Tottenham Hotspur recently found themselves at the centre of a goalkeeping debate after young Czech goalkeeper Antonín Kinský endured a difficult Champions League outing against Atlético Madrid. The 22-year-old was substituted just 17 minutes into the match after early mistakes contributed to Spurs conceding three quick goals in a 5–2 defeat.

The decision by Tottenham’s coach to replace the goalkeeper so early sparked widespread debate among pundits and former players about confidence management and competition in the position.

A similar dilemma is playing out at Chelsea, where coach Liam Rosenior has been rotating between Robert Sánchez and Filip Jørgensen, creating uncertainty over who is truly the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The situation intensified recently when Jørgensen started ahead of Sánchez in a Champions League match but made a costly error that contributed to Chelsea’s defeat, reigniting discussion over the club’s goalkeeper hierarchy.

Against that global backdrop, Maruwa’s approach at TelOne reflects a modern coaching trend where the No.1 shirt is increasingly earned week by week rather than guaranteed.

Beyond the goalkeeping issue, Maruwa said preparations for the clash with MWOS have been positive, with the team aiming to recover quickly after losing 2–1 to Dynamos in their opening league match.

“We need to go there with the right mindset and get maximum points,” he said.

After dropping points at home in their first outing of the season, TelOne will be hoping to bounce back quickly and keep pace with the leading teams as the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign gathers momentum.
