Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has openly acknowledged the presence of corruption within the municipal police, triggering widespread outrage among residents over allegations of financial mismanagement.
Speaking at a full council meeting, Councillor Mafume admitted that the City of Harare receives only a minimal portion of the revenue generated by municipal police operations, raising serious concerns about accountability and governance.
The revelations follow testimony from municipal police officer Farai Matewere before a commission of inquiry last week. Matewere disclosed that municipal police officers collect up to $1,500 daily on behalf of the council.
However, the funds are reportedly being siphoned off by corrupt cartels for personal enrichment, leaving the city deprived of critical resources needed for service delivery.
