In a chilling murder case that shocked the Midlands province, 21-year-old Nigel Phiri was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the savage killing of a 94-year-old woman in March 2024. Phiri, described as heartless and remorseless, was found guilty by the High Court sitting at Gweru.
The court heard that on the night of the crime, Phiri broke into the home of the elderly woman, stealing money and clothing. He then entered the lounge, where the victim was peacefully sleeping on the sofa, before violently attacking her. Phiri admitted to stabbing her three times on the left flank and twice on the neck, and then proceeded to violate her. To cover up the crime, he set the corpse on fire, which spread throughout the house, causing significant damage and a partial roof collapse.
The court, presided over by a High Court judge, found Phiri guilty of murder under aggravating circumstances. His actions were deemed particularly depraved, leading to a lengthy sentence.
