The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has says Platinum miner Mimosa will begin utilizing Zimplats’ smelting capacity early next year.

Speaking during a recent visit to Zimplats’ Selous Metallurgical Complex, Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Hon. Winston Chitando, highlighted the progress being made with the facility’s expansion projects.

“The government of Zimbabwe signed a significant $1.8 billion agreement with Zimplats aimed at increasing gross mining capacity and establishing additional refining facilities,” said Minister Chitando. “During this site visit, we were able to witness firsthand the advancements made, particularly in the refining process. The mining operations here are at the heart of this entire project, which is progressing well.”

Minister Chitando expressed his satisfaction with the progress made, noting that all major components necessary for the operationalization of the refinery have been procured.

“We’ve already begun assembling the key elements for the nickel and copper refining sections of the facility,” he said. “This is a major milestone not only for Zimplats but also for the broader mining sector in Zimbabwe.”

The minister emphasized that Zimplats has not only met its commitments outlined in the agreement but has exceeded them. “The successful procurement and assembly of equipment signify that the project is moving towards operationalization, fulfilling His Excellency’s vision for value addition and economic benefits for the nation,” Chitando stated.

The integration of Mimosa’s operations with Zimplats’ facilities is seen as a crucial step in consolidating mining activities in Zimbabwe. “This move is expected to boost production, improve efficiencies, and ultimately contribute significantly to the country’s GDP,” he added. “It’s a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to creating a conducive investment environment and fostering growth within the mining sector.”

The developments at Zimplats’ Selous Metallurgical Complex are a pivotal part of the government’s strategy to enhance Zimbabwe’s mining sector and attract further investments.
