A new variant of mpox, linked to Clade Ib, has killed at least 450 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in recent months. Experts are concerned that the variant may be spreading more easily and causing more severe illness, though much remains unknown.

No cases of Clade Ib have been reported in the UK, but experts warn that international action is essential to prevent its spread. The 2022 outbreak in Europe was caused by a different variant, Clade II, which continues to circulate globally.

Despite the emergence of new variants, experts emphasize that mpox can be controlled through equitable access to vaccines and non-discriminatory public health measures. The virus, which causes fever and rash, spreads primarily through skin-to-skin contact, including during sexual activity.

Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, assured that the risk to the general population remains low and ruled out the possibility of lockdowns. He highlighted that targeted engagement with high-risk communities, such as men who have sex with men, was key to controlling the 2022 outbreak.

Approximately 100 new Clade II cases are reported monthly in Europe. The WHO recommends vaccination for travelers to affected African regions but does not support mass vaccination or the use of masks.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has announced plans to secure 10 million vaccine doses, with vaccinations set to begin in the DRC and Nigeria next week. Bavarian Nordic, a Danish vaccine manufacturer, will transfer its technology to African producers to increase supply and reduce costs.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, urged the international community to avoid imposing travel bans on African nations, stressing the need for solidarity and appropriate medical support.
