Two police officers stationed in Mutare, Dudzai Jennifer Chiponda (47) and Glynislynn Mutsago (38), have been charged with bribery following their involvement in a corrupt scheme.

The court heard that on the 7th of January 2025, the two officers arrested an illegal taxi driver for pirating in the Mutare Central Business District and allegedly demanded a bribe of USD90 for the release of the driver’s vehicle.

When the driver could not meet the demand, he claimed to lack the funds and suggested going to his employer’s residence to retrieve the money. Instead, he reported the incident to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC). The officers were apprehended after they were caught accepting a reduced bribe of USD20.

Chiponda and Mutsago were granted bail and will return to court on the 25th of January 2025 to face the charges.
