The opening day of the fourth edition of the Nedbank Rugby Challenge Cup unfolded at the Machinery Exchange Stadium, showcasing an electrifying atmosphere filled with raw talent and fierce competition.

The tournament kicked off with an exhilarating clash between the women’s selection sides, the Possibles and Probables. In a display of speed and skill, the Possibles dominated their opponents with a decisive 34–12 victory. This fast-paced match set a high standard and emphasized the growing intensity and quality in women’s rugby, foreshadowing an exciting future for the sport.

Next up, an unexpected thrill gripped the crowd as the Nedbank Junior Sables (U20) delivered a stunning upset against the seasoned Old Georgians RFC, triumphing 33–22. The juniors demonstrated remarkable structure, blazing speed, and unwavering determination, providing an impressive preview ahead of their upcoming Barthes Trophy campaign.

Game 3 saw The Pitbulls RFC clash with Manicaland Province in a showdown that tested both teams’ mettle. Despite an early lead from the visitors, the Pitbulls unleashed their strength and strategy, overpowering their opponents with a resounding 36–7 win.

Their dominance in set-pieces and fierce defensive play illustrated the intensity that has come to define their style of rugby.

Game 4 showcased Old Hararians flexing their rugby prowess against Matabeleland Province. The match ended 31–8 in favour of OH, with Sables stars Hilton Mudariki and Aiden Bennet shining on the field.

Their leadership and composure allowed Old Hararians to control the tempo and rhythm of the game, showcasing the high calibre of play fans have come to expect.

The spirited day came to a close with hosts and reigning champions Harare Sports Club facing the young and ambitious Nedbank HPC side. Ultimately, Harare Sports Club secured a solid 25–13 victory, but not without an impressive showing from the HPC squad. Representing Nedbank’s Grassroots to Greatness initiative, the young players exhibited resilience and potential against their seasoned opponents.

With Day One wrapping up, the champions asserted their dominance while new talents made significant impressions on the spectators. The excitement continues as matches are scheduled to resume next weekend on Saturday, 5 April, and Sunday, 6 April 2025, with Day Two fixtures to be announced on Monday.

The groundwork has been laid for what promises to be another thrilling weekend of rugby, filled with intense clashes and high-quality performances.
