A Nigerian man, Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal, 24, has been extradited to the US to face charges related to the sextortion of 17-year-old Gavin Guffey, who took his own life. Lawal, accused of posing as a woman online to blackmail the victim, pleaded not guilty in a South Carolina court. He faces a mandatory 30-year sentence if convicted.
This follows previous prosecutions of Nigerians for sextortion in the US. Instagram owner Meta has removed thousands of accounts linked to such scams, while Nigeria has invested in a cyber-crime centre to combat the issue.
