Nigerians are voicing anger over significant price hikes in mobile data charges by major telecom operators MTN and Airtel. MTN, the largest network in Nigeria, tripled the cost of its popular 15GB weekly bundle, raising it from 2,000 naira ($1.33) to 6,000 naira ($3.99). Airtel has also increased its tariffs, with both companies citing rising operational costs.
The hikes follow approval from Nigeria’s telecom regulator, which had capped price increases at 50%, but some tariffs appear to exceed this limit. The increase adds to the financial strain of Nigerians already grappling with a cost-of-living crisis and inflation rates not seen in decades.
MTN defended the hike, stating it was necessary to improve services, while Airtel has not commented. Social media reactions have been harsh, with many arguing that the price jump will further hurt people struggling to afford basic services.
Digital content creators, particularly those reliant on online businesses, expressed concern that the price increases would worsen the already difficult economic conditions.
