At least nine people, including a 10-year-old child, died in a tragic incident at a concert by gospel singer Mike Kalambay at Kinshasa’s Martyrs Stadium on Saturday. Overcrowding at the 80,000-seater venue led to chaos and fatalities.
Governor Daniel Bumba blamed “excesses and crowd movements” for the disaster. DR Congo’s Justice Minister has ordered an investigation and the questioning of police and organizers, Maajabu Gospel. The organizers, who claimed the crowd was 30,000, less than the stadium’s capacity, expressed deep sorrow and blamed “troublemakers.”
The stadium is now closed until further notice. Kinshasa authorities have called for stricter security measures and adherence to safety regulations. This incident follows a similar tragedy in 2022 at the same venue, where 11 people died during a concert by Fally Ipupa.
